Oyo ready and Prepare for world Sango Festival

Oyo people took to the Alaafin’s palace in preparation for the grand finale of the World Sango Festival.

The festival which is annually recognised all over the world celebrates the tradition and heritage of the old Oyo Empire.

The week-long celebration began on Thursday, August 18 and will end on Saturday, August 27.
The festival which is recognised by UNESCO is expected to attract tourists from 42 countries.

In preparation of the grand finale, residents troop to the palace of the Alaafin where music and dancing went on nonstop into the evening. As part of the essence of the world festival, the Yoruba culture was also promoted as food, drinks and attires peculiar to the indigenous people were on display.

Since it was rebranded in 2013 from Sango festival to World Sango Festival, it has attracted thousands of visitors from all over the world.
Oyo people have taken advantage of the once-in-a-year festival to also promote the sale of their goods as they occupied the front of the palace to display their wares.

There was a sense of euphoria in the palace as last-minute preparation is being put in place.

Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III who is the chief host will also grace the occasion although it is a taboo for him to see the Sango Koso.

Naijacry also covered the festival in 2015 where the culture ambassador to the Alaafin of Oyo, Dr. Paula Gomes exclusively spoke to Naij.com that the festival is not only a carnival but also a preservation of the rich heritage of culture and tradition of the Oyo people.

She wondered why Nigerians are very negative about their own culture and tradition while embracing foreign cultures, noting that Nigerians must love their own heritage and tradition.
